It is all about removing obstacles. If the team feel like this proecess is just "something they have to go through" it means it doesn't serve the purpose.
I'm re-doing our on-boarding a little bit in preperation for new hiring period. Some new ideas and process simplification in place. My goal is simple - one day from 9AM to 5PM and person knows what is where, how, and can start doing their job.
I think this process doesn't get much love because it is mostly desgined by HR team who has no idea how things work. Especially in big corp.
