I can't imagine a leadership role where I still have to code and coach a team. It's possible with a small team, like 2-3 max, as you mentioned, but not on a long run. So I agree with you totally. This doesn't work, yet so many companies still do it, but that just says a lot about them, that's all.


On that topic... I went through an interview process with a fairly early startup a few months ago. They wanted me to bring "people skills" . As a head of engineering I supposed to also help with code reviews, maybe a bit of coding and of course ... manage the team of 30, yes, THIRTY, direct reports 🤣 Totally flat structure. They really didn't like when I told them we need to do something about it and add talented engineering managers. 🙃
